Riverside County sheriff’s deputy shoots, kills man in Perris

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. — A man was shot and killed in Perris Monday by a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy.

The shooting occurred shortly after 8 a.m. at a residence in the 3300 block of Albillo Loop while officers were conducting a probation compliance check.

Several people were in the garden of the house. One of the men provided false identifying information to officers and attempted to flee, refusing commands to stop, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officers used a Taser on the man, but it proved “ineffective,” the sheriff’s office reported.

The man continued to walk away and pulled out a handgun, prompting an officer to shoot him, the sheriff’s office reported.

It’s unclear how many bullets hit the man.

Deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived, according to the sheriff’s office. The man was transported to a local hospital where he died. His identity has not been released and it is unclear whether he was on probation.

Per Sheriff’s Office policy, the unnamed deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave. A member of the Riverside County Prosecutor’s Office will conduct an investigation into the fatal shooting.

No deputies were injured during the incident.
